Since graduating from college, it has become my mission to spread the proper use of Vetiver Grass (The Vetiver System) for the benefit of Florida. This mission really breaks down into two parts:

I love native plants and protecting Florida's ecosystems from invasive plants has always been important to me. So, I would never advocate a plant that wasn't good for Florida. According to the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council, only a small percentage (<10%) of the 1,300+ plant species that have been introduced to Florida have become invasive. In fact, most of the plant introductions have been beneficial. 

It bothers me when state environmental officials say that we should only use native plants, then they sod our highways, ditches & retention ponds with Bahia Grass. Bahia is a seeding, stoloniferous exotic plant that needs frequent mowing. But using Bahia Grass for erosion control is standard practice. I think we can do a better job protecting our environment when we allow ourselves the tools to do a better job. I also think its time we reconsidered our standard practices.
