May 21st-Prune Vetiver as Needed to Encourage Growth |
ABOUT USI am a
self-confessed Vetiver fanatic. I grew up
in the nursery business. I spent my childhood
studying plants
and learing their role in the Florida ecosystem. So it was only natural
that when I went off to college at UF that I studied Environmental
Horticulture. While in college in the early 1990's, I attended
an
ethnobotany symposium where I first heard of Vetiver Grass and the
Vetiver System. I was amazed & dumbfounded that such
plant
could help with so many problems, but yet it was unheard of here in
Florida. Why wasn't there a voice for such a system?
Since graduating from college, it has become my mission
to
spread the proper use of Vetiver Grass (The Vetiver System) for the
benefit of Florida. This
mission really breaks down into two parts:
That's it. We want our customer's projects to succeed because satisfied customers will become fans & agents of the Vetiver System themselves. USING NON-NATIVE PLANTS I love native plants and protecting Florida's ecosystems from invasive plants has always been important to me. So, I would never advocate a plant that wasn't good for Florida. According to the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council, only a small percentage (<10%) of the 1,300+ plant species that have been introduced to Florida have become invasive. In fact, most of the plant introductions have been beneficial. It bothers me when state environmental officials say that we should only use native plants, then they sod our highways, ditches & retention ponds with Bahia Grass. Bahia is a seeding, stoloniferous exotic plant that needs frequent mowing. But using Bahia Grass for erosion control is standard practice. I think we can do a better job protecting our environment when we allow ourselves the tools to do a better job. I also think its time we reconsidered our standard practices. WHO WE AREFlorida Vetiver
Sytems is a small, family owned business and
non-seeding (sterile) Chrysopogon
(Vetiver) zizanioides 'Sunshine' is all we
grow. We have
a small nursery were we grow, study and produce the best
quality plants.
